Glossary of terms

  • When the hearing is postponed to a later date.

  • A statement of facts which are agreed to by both parties.

  • A note next to the teacher’s registration information on the Teaching Council’s public register.

  • Hearing.

  • The teacher’s practicing certificate or registration is cancelled.

  • A formal statement of disapproval.

  • Behaviour.

  • An amount either party is ordered to pay to contribute towards the costs of the disciplinary process.

  • Lawyer representing the Complaints Assessment Committee

  • Lawyer representing the teacher.

  • Written outcome of the hearing.

  • A notice confirming the time/date/location of the hearing and confirm who will be on the Tribunal panel. The notice of hearing is sent to the parties by the Tribunal Coordinator.

  • Either the teacher, the teacher’s representative/counsel, counsel for the Complaints Assessment Committee.

  • Permanent suppression of someone’s name, identifying particulars or personal information.

  • A hearing where neither party attends. The panel read all the materials, discuss the matter and make a decision. Papers hearings are not open to the public.

  • A meeting between the Tribunal Chair or Deputy Chair, the parties and the Tribunal Coordinator. The PHC.

  • The teacher who is facing a charge before the Tribunal.
